Code Red Consultants
  •

In May, Code Red Consultants rolled out a Global Webinar Series that kept the industry engaged by offering live, remote learning opportunities that we felt may be of interest. Over four weeks, our valued partners took the opportunity to strengthen their competency on topics that ranged from means of egress fundamentals to code application in existing buildings. The results are in and our expectations were exceeded by leaps and bounds…

If you missed a specific session in our series or would prefer a more customized session for team-based collaboration, please reach out to our team. This is a unique opportunity to not just cover a code topic of interest, but to take a step back and share great lessons learned across project teams.

Code Red Consultants is participating in a knowledge share with a multi-disciplined team organized by STV/DPM aimed at providing a tool kit of industry best practices and workplace design and construction requirements in this dynamic environment. The group meets regularly and is issuing weekly publications to the real estate community in an effort to provide a consolidated source of information from multiple perspectives in real time as news and best practices continue to unfold in thus dynamic environment. Issue 1 focused on providing a return to work tool kit and issue 2 presented a guide to restarting construction activities. There are numerous more releases in weeks to come. Find more information here.

In response to COVID-19, construction site shutdowns are taking place all over the country. To assist those interested in learning more about maintaining a firesafe construction site, the AFAA will be hosting a webinar on Thursday, March 26, 2020 at 3pm EST. This webinar will highlight the recommended process for general and sub-contractors to document and implement a modified construction fire safety (aka NFPA 241/Impairment) plan in this shutdown work environment.

Peter Harrod, P.E., Principal at Code Red Consultants, will be a primary participant of this webinar.  Pete will primarily focus on what safeguards require immediate implementation and which critical features of the Plan require modification/resubmission to the AHJ.

FIRE AND LIFE SAFETY SPECIAL INSPECTOR

They’re creepy and they’re kooky. Mysterious and spooky. They’re all together ooky. The Code Red family! Snap! Snap!

While most days at the office are spent doing code research, report writing, computer modeling and all other things fire protection and life safety related, the staff deviated slightly this Halloween. Standard business attire was put aside, and the costumes came out. A Spooktacular time was had by all!

It should be no surprise that, in an office full of fire protection engineers, Dan Picciano’s fire hydrant won for Best Costume! Thankfully, there were no dalmatians in attendance!

On Thursday, August 29th, Code Red Consultants skipped out early from our daily routines to enjoy a fun summer evening. This year found us at Springdale Barrel Room in Framingham where we tasted some fine local beer and challenged our skills with arcade games. It was a nice evening for all to relax, sharpen up their taste buds and gaming skills before heading into the Labor Day weekend.

Code Red is in our sixth year of business and our team has grown to 32 wonderful employees. We continue to thrive and enjoy ourselves along the way. Our clients support is greatly appreciated!

Code Red Consultants continued their annual tradition of ensuring Boston’s marathoners stay hydrated. At Ashland’s Mile Marker 3, the team of 30 fire protection engineers worked hard to pass water and Gatorade to thirsty runners on what turned out to be an unseasonably warm and humid day. Andrew Harrod, son of Principal Peter Harrod, was one of the tens of thousands of runners who appreciated a cup of fluids at this early point in the race. Aside from providing behind the scenes access to one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events, this assignment allowed us to put a different spin on our team-first approach as we served these deserving runners.

On January 17th, 2019, Christopher Lynch, P.E. will be presenting to the Massachusetts Healthcare Facilities Professionals Society (MHFPS) at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Boston, MA. The presentation will be on “CMS and Joint Commission Life Safety Inspections – How Do They Differ?” If you are interested in joining MHFPS and/or attending the presentation, please RSVP with Mark Robinson (mrobins1@nebh.org). Additional details on the presentation can be found below:

CMS and Joint Commission Life Safety Inspections- How do they differ?

Hospitals often are surveyed by both the Joint Commission and CMS in the same year as part of a validation survey. While the two organizations are reviewing the building to generally the same code requirements, their findings, inspection methods, and analysis often differ significantly. This presentation will provide a case study comparing a recent joint commission inspection and CMS validation survey to compare and contrast the two survey processes. Additionally, recommended best practices will be presented from a facility directors perspective.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the relationship between the Joint Commission, CMS, and the codes and standards they enforce.
  2. Understand the survey methodology utilized by Joint Commission and CMS life safety inspectors
  3. Identify key differences commonly experienced in the analysis performed by the two organizations
  4. Identify best practices to prepare for a survey from either the Joint Commission or CMS.

We hope to see you there!

On Friday September 15th, we shut down our office for the day to participate in our annual Summer Outing. This year we hosted the event at the Deerfield River where our team embarked on an thrilling whitewater rafting trip. We honed our skills on rapids such as Microwave, Freight Train, and Pinball before tackling the exciting Class III rapid called the Zoar Gap. Between rapids, we had to opportunity to float in the crisp 58°F water (all staff took the plunge!) and our 3 rafts engaged in some serious water fights using our oars and a 5-gallon bucket. It was a great day to unplug, take a well deserved break, and enjoy the beautiful Berkshire Mountains scenery.

The Summer Outing also marked our company anniversary. It’s hard to believe that 4 years have already passed and it seems like just yesterday when the 3 founding principals were sharing less than 500 square feet of space in a sublet office. Over the years, we have grown to a staff of 18 dedicated, passionate employees and moved into our own 6,500 square foot office that we now call home. We truly appreciate our client’s support over the past 4 years and look forward to continue building fruitful, lasting relationships in the future!

On June 13th, Code Red Consultants will be presenting to the Fire Prevention Association of Massachusetts, Inc. (FPAM) on two separate fire prevention/life safety topics that are currently trending in the industry. Chris Lynch, P.E., will be presenting on Firestopping and Chad Farrell, P.E., will be presenting on Phased Occupancy Planning. The monthly meeting will be held at the Auburn Elks on 754 Southbridge Street in Auburn, MA. With the amount of construction ongoing to both new and existing structures, these topics are valuable to owners, contractors, fire and building service professionals and the alike.

If you are interested in learning more about firestopping, phased occupancy planning, or FPAM in general, please join us for the educational meeting. The deadline to reserve a spot is Thursday June 8th – no late reservations or walk-ins are allowed. You can sign up for the seminar at the following link: http://www.massfpam.org/meetings–locations
