Code Red Consultants

The team at Code Red Consultants took a break from their daily routines to enjoy a fun company outing at Wachusett Mountain in Princeton, MA. The day included collaboration and team building that was orchestrated by High 5 Adventures who have helped other winning organizations such as the championship Celtics and Bruins. The activities provided opportunities for all team members to engage in problem solving and communication in preselected subgroups of individuals that cross usual service/market boundaries. The overall atmosphere of the day was to have fun, learn more about your team members and bring out everyone’s competitive spirits (never a difficult task at CRC).

Code Red is in our eighth year of business and our team has grown to 40 engaging employees, which is certainly a far cry from the “table for four reservation” we made at our first summer outing.

On October 5th, Code Red Consultants will be presenting at the New England Building Officials Education Association’s annual seminar.  Carl Nelson, P.E. and Joseph Igoe will be presenting Back to Basics: Means of Egress and Caitlin Gamache, P.E. will be presenting Accessibility Scoping & Common Challenges in New and Existing Buildings.  The annual seminar is being held at the Murray D Lincoln Campus Center at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

If you are interested in learning more about these topics, please join us for the seminar.

This year the New England Healthcare Engineers’ Society (NEHES) hosted their first-ever virtual Annual Fall Conference from September 1 – 3, 2020. There were over 250 facility mangers, business partners and esteemed speakers through the event. On the final day of the conference, Chris Lynch and Carl Nelson of Code Red Consultants hosted a Breakout Session with Rich Rybski and Kirsten Waltz of Baystate Health. The session was titled “How Complete is your Life Safety Program” and had over 50 attendees.

Healthcare facilities are faced with a daunting challenge of maintaining life safety compliance in a dynamic environment in accordance with numerous regulations enforced by multiple authorities. Most organizations look to achieve compliance through a group effort that requires coordination between multiple departments. Individuals in responsible charge of portions of life safety compliance are often wearing multiple hats and are not solely focused on monitoring their piece of the life safety program on a daily basis. Most facilities go in to “high alert” mode when they expect a survey and try to get their house in order at the 11th hour. Quite often there are holes identified and rather than focusing on maintaining compliance, resources are allocated to repairing or potentially even hiding issues.

The presentation was a case study of the life safety program developed which has helped Baystate Health evolve from a reactive to proactive compliance approach over the course of a decade. Real examples of major contributing factors including planning and construction projects, barrier management, life safety drawings, ITM, and policies and procedures will be discussed in a framework for attendees to take with them back to their organizations.

Though not physically together in our Southborough, MA office, Code Red thinks it is important during this time to stay as connected as we can. To that end, our social committee is keeping all engaged via weekly virtual get-togethers, where we share stories from home. We put most everything out on the “virtual table,” from reviewing tips to entertain the kids to DIY manicures. We hope these gabfests bring moments of giddiness and enthusiasm to this time.

Separately, we are encouraging our team to partake in some type of daily exercise to manage stress and stay healthy. Typical routines consist of walking, running, yoga, and/or You Tube workout sessions of interest.

We hope that taking time to partake in these extracurricular activities will help keep our mind and bodies sharp.

“To keep the body in good health is a duty, otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” – Buddha.

In May, Code Red Consultants rolled out a Global Webinar Series that kept the industry engaged by offering live, remote learning opportunities that we felt may be of interest. Over four weeks, our valued partners took the opportunity to strengthen their competency on topics that ranged from means of egress fundamentals to code application in existing buildings. The results are in and our expectations were exceeded by leaps and bounds…

If you missed a specific session in our series or would prefer a more customized session for team-based collaboration, please reach out to our team. This is a unique opportunity to not just cover a code topic of interest, but to take a step back and share great lessons learned across project teams.

Code Red Consultants is participating in a knowledge share with a multi-disciplined team organized by STV/DPM aimed at providing a tool kit of industry best practices and workplace design and construction requirements in this dynamic environment. The group meets regularly and is issuing weekly publications to the real estate community in an effort to provide a consolidated source of information from multiple perspectives in real time as news and best practices continue to unfold in thus dynamic environment. Issue 1 focused on providing a return to work tool kit and issue 2 presented a guide to restarting construction activities. There are numerous more releases in weeks to come. Find more information here.

In response to COVID-19, construction site shutdowns are taking place all over the country. To assist those interested in learning more about maintaining a firesafe construction site, the AFAA will be hosting a webinar on Thursday, March 26, 2020 at 3pm EST. This webinar will highlight the recommended process for general and sub-contractors to document and implement a modified construction fire safety (aka NFPA 241/Impairment) plan in this shutdown work environment.

Peter Harrod, P.E., Principal at Code Red Consultants, will be a primary participant of this webinar.  Pete will primarily focus on what safeguards require immediate implementation and which critical features of the Plan require modification/resubmission to the AHJ.

FIRE AND LIFE SAFETY SPECIAL INSPECTOR

They’re creepy and they’re kooky. Mysterious and spooky. They’re all together ooky. The Code Red family! Snap! Snap!

While most days at the office are spent doing code research, report writing, computer modeling and all other things fire protection and life safety related, the staff deviated slightly this Halloween. Standard business attire was put aside, and the costumes came out. A Spooktacular time was had by all!

It should be no surprise that, in an office full of fire protection engineers, Dan Picciano’s fire hydrant won for Best Costume! Thankfully, there were no dalmatians in attendance!

On Thursday, August 29th, Code Red Consultants skipped out early from our daily routines to enjoy a fun summer evening. This year found us at Springdale Barrel Room in Framingham where we tasted some fine local beer and challenged our skills with arcade games. It was a nice evening for all to relax, sharpen up their taste buds and gaming skills before heading into the Labor Day weekend.

Code Red is in our sixth year of business and our team has grown to 32 wonderful employees. We continue to thrive and enjoy ourselves along the way. Our clients support is greatly appreciated!
