Engine 17 Dorchester

Code Red Consultants provided Fire Protection, Life Safety, and Accessibility Code Consulting services to Annum Architects for the BFD Engine 17 project in Dorchester, MA. Situated on historic Meetinghouse Hill, Engine 17 is only the second ground-up new firehouse built in Boston in over 40 years. The new, approximately 18,000 GSF facility was constructed on a former parking lot adjacent to the existing firehouse. This project holds special meaning for our team, as public safety lies at the heart of our mission and remains a constant priority in our commitment to giving back to the community.

Annum’s ground-up design incorporated energy-efficient boilers, two apparatus bays, second-floor spaces with an open-concept kitchen and dayroom, a fitness area, lockers, sleeping quarters, and office spaces. Large windows introduce natural light into key program areas, creating a bright, welcoming environment. The exterior features brick and stone to complement the surrounding neighborhood.

The design phase was completed in 2020/2021, and construction was completed in September 2024. This project was a collaboration between the Boston Fire Department and the City of Boston Public Facilities Department.

Fitchburg City Hall

Fitchburg City Hall was originally built in 1853 and saw a large addition in 1879 to expand to meet existing needs. While they were some renovations done throughout the years, it wasn’t until 2020 that the structure was completely stripped down to the framework and rebuilt in a modernized fashion. Code Red Consultants assisted Icon Architecture to bring their 21st century design to fruition by assisting the team in navigating the code paths for a safe building incorporating today’s architectural goals. Existing floors were opened to provide a grand entry and to provide light and communication throughout the circulation paths and working spaces. Adequate separations and staggered double height spaces were coordinated to maintain fire safety in the historic structure.

As part of the extensive interior work, floors were redesigned and installed to align differing heights allowing for easier and more accessible navigation through the civic building. New town administration spaces were created throughout allowing for more efficient town services. Building accessibility was vastly improved via the new front ramped entryway and front elevator. Exterior facade improvements, and site work rounded out the design to make the Fitchburg City Hall stand out as a modern municipal building with a historic feel.
