Carl Nelson, P.E.

Principal

As a principal of Code Red Consultants, Carl brings more than 10 years of experience in fire protection and life safety consulting to help clients solve unique and complex code compliance challenges. He is skilled at understanding a client’s business goals and project objectives, and applying his deep technical expertise to deliver effective engineering solutions.

Carl’s extensive project experience spans all markets including college and university campus buildings, hospitals, transportation facilities such as airports and light rail stations, high-rise office and residential buildings, laboratories and pharmaceutical buildings, and other mixed use buildings. His work has included private developments and publicly funded projects with construction costs upwards of $2 billion. Carl enjoys collaborating closely with design teams, owners, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction to ensure that the code-related aspects of his projects meet all stakeholders’ needs. He is a frequent presenter at various state building and fire official organizations where he provides training on a wide range of important, and often timely, topics. Carl is active in the code community and remains focused on staying up-to-date on ICC and NFPA code changes that may impact his clients’ future projects.

As one of four principals on Code Red Consultant’s leadership team, Carl works tirelessly to ensure that the firm consistently provides superior client service on every project. He inspires trust and loyalty from his talented team by fostering direction and purpose for the company and working “in the trenches” alongside his staff to meet project goals on a daily basis.

What do you love most about your job?

I love the variety day-to-day. From being in the office fixated on solving complicated code challenges, to collaborating with design teams and code officials, to being on building sites performing inspections – no projects or days are the same. This variety inspires me to learn new facets of our job every day, which fosters growth both personally and professionally. For me, constantly learning and growing are true qualities of a great job. The fact that we are also making the world a safer place is just icing on the cake!
